Australian PR from a student visa is not automatic. It is a multi-step sequence that depends on the occupation you qualify into, the points you accumulate, and whether a state or regional nomination is available. Planning starts before enrolment, not after graduation.
The five-stage sequence
- Subclass 500 (student visa): complete a CRICOS-registered course that leads to a listed occupation.
- Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate): 2 years for Bachelor and taught Master; 3 for Master by research; 4 for PhD; regional extension available.
- Skills assessment: through the relevant assessing authority — ACS (ICT), Engineers Australia, VETASSESS (generalist), AHPRA (health), and others.
- Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect: register your profile with your points, occupation and preferences.
- Invitation and visa lodgement: Subclass 189 (points-only), 190 (state-nominated), 491 (regional-provisional).
Where the points come from
- Age: 25 – 32 gives the maximum 30 points; drops for older applicants.
- English language: Proficient (IELTS 7 or equivalent) gives 10 points; Superior (IELTS 8 or equivalent) gives 20.
- Skilled work experience: overseas and Australian work experience are counted separately.
- Educational qualifications: Bachelor gives 15 points; Master or Doctorate gives 15 to 20.
- Australian study requirement: 5 points for completing at least 2 academic years of Australian study.
- Professional Year programme: 5 points (applicable in ICT, engineering and accounting).
- Regional study: 5 points for study at a regional campus.
- Partner skills: 5 or 10 points depending on partner qualifications.
- Community language accreditation: 5 points for NAATI-certified translators / interpreters.
- State or territory nomination: 5 points (Subclass 190); 15 points for regional 491 nomination.
Choosing an occupation at course-selection stage
The biggest decision is not the university. It is the occupation your course qualifies you into and whether that occupation is on the current Core Skills Occupation List or the Skills in Demand list. Common Nepali-friendly paths:
- Registered Nurse via a Bachelor of Nursing and AHPRA registration.
- ICT roles (Software Engineer, Analyst Programmer, Systems Analyst, Data Scientist) via a Bachelor or Master in Computer Science / Information Technology and ACS skills assessment. Professional Year adds 5 points.
- Engineers (civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, mining) via accredited engineering degrees and Engineers Australia assessment.
- Accountants via CPA / CA ANZ / IPA assessment, usually paired with a Professional Year.
- Teachers (secondary, early childhood) via accredited teaching degrees.
- Social Workers via AASW-accredited degrees.
Regional strategy
Studying at a regional campus opens the Second Post-Higher Education Work stream (1 additional year in Category 2, 2 additional years in Category 3) and adds 5 study-region points at PR stage. The Subclass 491 regional-provisional visa route can be a faster path for occupations where the metropolitan pipeline is competitive.
Where things go wrong
- Choosing a course with no occupation on the current list — no PR pathway at all.
- Not completing the Australian Study Requirement (at least 2 academic years) — loses 5 points.
- Missing the 485 lodgement window (6 months after Completion Letter) — no post-study work visa.
- Not planning for English at Superior level — leaves 20 points on the table.
- Not aligning post-study work with the nominated occupation — makes the skills assessment harder.
Realistic timeline
- Year 1 – 2: Student visa and course.
- Year 3 (Master): complete Australian Study Requirement.
- Year 3 – 5: 485 open work rights and skilled employment.
- Year 4 – 6: skills assessment, English retake to Superior, EOI in SkillSelect.
- Year 5 – 7: invitation and PR grant.
