Chevening is the highest-visibility scholarship a Nepali applicant can pursue for UK study. It is fully funded, it is Master’s only, and it is more competitive on essays than on grades. This guide walks through the application in the order it needs to be built.
Eligibility check
- Citizenship: citizen of a Chevening-eligible country. Nepal is eligible.
- Bachelor degree: an undergraduate degree that enables entry to a UK Master’s.
- Work experience: at least 2 years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of full-time or part-time paid work, unpaid volunteer work, or paid or unpaid internship experience.
- Return-home commitment: commit to returning to Nepal for a minimum of 2 years after the scholarship.
- Three UK Master’s offers: apply to three eligible one-year UK taught Master’s programmes and hold at least one unconditional offer at the offer-verification deadline.
What Chevening covers

The four essays
Each essay is capped at approximately 500 words. Every essay needs specific examples, not general claims.
- Leadership and influence: describe how you have positively influenced others. Chevening looks for evidence, not adjectives.
- Networking: describe an example of how you have built and used a professional network.
- Studying in the UK: why these three universities and courses fit your professional goal.
- Career plan: your short-term and long-term career plans, and how Chevening will contribute.
Application timeline

- December – January: applications shortlisted.
- February – April: interviews at British Embassy Kathmandu.
- May – June: conditional offers. Verify eligibility and unconditional UK offer.
- September: successful candidates start their UK Master’s.
Interview preparation
The Chevening interview is competency-based. Interviewers use the STAR structure (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Prepare 8 to 12 stories from your work experience that demonstrate leadership, networking, resilience, communication, and impact. Each story should stand alone.
The three-university strategy
Choose three universities where you have a realistic chance of an unconditional offer by the mid-2027 deadline. A common split: one safe (rolling admissions, generous entry), one target (best fit), one ambitious (Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, Imperial, Edinburgh) if your profile supports it. Programmes should share a coherent professional angle so the essays hold together.
