When Nepali students ask us “which country is cheapest,” the honest answer is it depends on where you live, what you study, and how you count post-study work. The government-set financial thresholds
Each destination sets a minimum you must prove for a study visa. This is a floor, not a real budget:
- Australia: AUD 29,710 per year in living-cost evidence, plus first-year tuition and travel. Source: Department of Home Affairs.
- Canada: CAD 22,895 per year for a single applicant outside Quebec, plus first-year tuition and travel. Applies to applications submitted on or after 1 September 2025. Source: IRCC.
- New Zealand: NZD 20,000 per year plus prepaid tuition, evidenced by 3 months of bank statements. Source: Immigration New Zealand.
- UK: Home Office benchmark of GBP 1,483 per month in London or GBP 1,334 per month outside London for up to 9 months. Roughly GBP 12,000 to GBP 16,000 across the year. Source: gov.uk Student visa.
- USA: No fixed federal threshold. Financial evidence must cover the total cost your Form I-20 states for one academic year (a school-specific number). Source: U.S. Department of State / Embassy Nepal.
Student visa and mandatory US Government fees
- Australia Subclass 500 student visa fee: confirm the current amount on the Department of Home Affairs Subclass 500 page before lodging (fees are updated periodically by legislative instrument).
- UK Student Route: GBP 558 from 8 April 2026 (up from GBP 524). Immigration Health Surcharge at the student rate: GBP 776 per year of visa. Dependants pay IHS at the full rate of GBP 1,035 per year.
- Canada: Study permit CAD 150 plus biometrics CAD 85.
- USA F1: USD 185 MRV visa application fee plus USD 350 I-901 SEVIS fee. Total mandatory US Government fees: USD 535.
- New Zealand: confirm the current student visa fee on the Immigration New Zealand website.
Post-study work rights side by side
- Australia Subclass 485: up to 2 years for Bachelor and taught Master graduates (age cap 35), 3 years for Master by research, 4 years for PhD. Regional Category 2 graduates get 1 additional year through the Second Post-Higher Education Work stream; Category 3 graduates get 2 additional years, subject to a 2-year regional residence requirement.
- UK Graduate Route: 2 years for Bachelor and taught Master applications submitted before 1 January 2027; reduced to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 (Statement of Changes HC 1099, 14 October 2025). PhD remains at 3 years.
- Canada PGWP: up to 3 years depending on the length of your programme. Bachelor, Master and Doctoral programmes at eligible universities are exempt from the field-of-study restrictions that IRCC introduced from 1 November 2024; college and non-university programmes must be in an eligible field (Agriculture and Agri-Food, Healthcare, STEM, Trade, or Transport) with CLB or NCLC 5.
- USA F1: 12 months Optional Practical Training (OPT). Graduates with a STEM-designated major qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension — a total of up to 36 months of post-graduation work.
- New Zealand: up to 3 years of open work rights for Level 7 (Bachelor) and higher. Level 4 to 6 diplomas are typically 1 year and must be field-related. From 16 November 2026, a new Short-term Graduate Work Visa gives 6 months of open work rights that can be used to transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa.
Work while studying
- Australia: 48 hours per fortnight during study terms, unlimited during official breaks.
- UK: up to 20 hours per week during term time for postgraduate and degree-level students, full time during vacations. Verify against your specific CAS.
- Canada: Full-time students at eligible DLIs can work off-campus without a separate work permit; hour limits are set by IRCC and updated from time to time.
- USA F1: up to 20 hours per week on-campus during term; full time during breaks. Off-campus work generally requires CPT, OPT or specific authorisation.
- New Zealand: up to 25 hours per week during term for eligible tertiary and secondary students (from 3 November 2025), full time during scheduled holidays.
Health cover and mandatory insurance
- Australia: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory for the duration of the student visa. Providers are approved by the Department of Home Affairs.
- UK: Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) at GBP 776 per year, paid with the visa application, covers NHS access.
- Canada: Health cover is provincial. Some provinces cover international students under provincial plans; others require private cover through your DLI.
- USA: No federal mandate, but nearly every university requires you to enrol in the school health plan or show an approved waiver plan.
- New Zealand: Immigration New Zealand requires acceptable medical and travel insurance for the duration of the student visa.
Which country fits which Nepali applicant?
These are broad patterns, not rules:
- Career-focused Bachelor plus Master pathway with a clear PR intent: Australia and Canada continue to have the clearest post-study work to PR pipeline for popular Nepali disciplines.
- Shorter one-year taught Master with lower up-front cost: the UK still offers 1-year taught Masters and lower financial-evidence floors than Australia; take account of the 18-month Graduate Route change from 1 January 2027.
- Research and top-tier STEM: the USA gives 36 months of post-graduation work with STEM OPT and unmatched research funding, but visa-application volatility and school-specific costs mean careful shortlisting is needed.
- Lower financial evidence, generous PSW, and PR pathway via the Green List: New Zealand for engineering, healthcare and ICT graduates.
