What the Skilled Worker route requires
- A job offer from a UK employer holding a Home Office Sponsor Licence (Worker route).
- A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) issued by that employer.
- The job must be at RQF Level 3 or above (equivalent to A-level).
- The occupation code must appear on the eligible list; check the current Skilled Worker eligible occupations page on gov.uk.
- Salary must meet the general threshold (currently GBP 38,700 for most roles) or the going rate for the specific occupation, whichever is higher. Exceptions apply for new entrants, PhD-relevant roles, and Immigration Salary List occupations.
- English language at CEFR B1 minimum.
How to transition from Graduate Route
- Find a sponsor with an active Sponsor Licence during your Graduate Route period.
- Confirm the role, occupation code and salary meet the current requirements.
- The employer issues a defined CoS.
- Apply to switch to Skilled Worker from within the UK; you do not need to leave.
- Pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (currently GBP 776/year at the student rate is not applicable here — Skilled Worker IHS is GBP 1,035/year for main applicant).
Path to settlement
- 5 years of continuous residence on qualifying visas leads to eligibility for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
- Graduate Route time does not count toward ILR; only time on Skilled Worker (and certain other work routes) counts.
- Practical implication: switch to Skilled Worker as early as possible after Graduate Route grant to maximise the ILR clock.
Sponsor Licence check
The Home Office publishes the Register of Licensed Sponsors. Before accepting a Skilled Worker offer, verify the employer holds a valid Worker route Sponsor Licence. Small businesses that do not appear on the register cannot sponsor.
