The student population is 47% male, 53% female, and 29% from traditionally underrepresented groups. Most students are enrolled in full-time courses and are of typical age. In addition to working and taking care of their families, many students also attend college. CMU is pleased to provide working and non-traditional students with the chance to accelerate their professional development and improve their education through evening, online, and remote learning sessions.

The university’s 326 full-time academic and technical faculty members, who teach in 13 departments, make up its core. Enjoying over 300 days of sunshine a year, the area is home to some of the best outdoor activity in the nation, nestled between mountains and high-desert valleys. The primary location for Colorado Mesa University’s vocational and technical programs, or CMU Tech, is the Tilman M. Bishop Campus, which was created through a collaboration between the university, Mesa County Valley School District 51, and local businesses. The Bishop Campus offers programs to meet the requirements of local high school students as well as college students in technical education. The Montrose Campus of Colorado Mesa offers access to a range of associate and bachelor degree programs in a picturesque, smaller community campus setting. It is situated at the foot of the stunning San Juan Mountains.
Competitive Spirit
As a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and NCAA Division II, Colorado Mesa University enjoys a strong winning tradition. Over 100 conference and regional championships have been won by the Mavericks. There are currently 28 Colorado Mesa varsity teams participating in college sports. Over 700 student athletes at CMU have the chance to compete at a premier Division II university and obtain a degree at the same time.
CMU boasts some of the finest facilities in the conference in its recently renovated athletic offices, field house, practice fields, and brand new El Pomar Natatorium.
