What is a PGWP?
A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit designed for international students who graduate from approved Canadian programs. It grants you the freedom to work full-time for any employer, anywhere in Canada, for a set period. This valuable work experience can enhance your resume, improve your English or French language skills, and pave the way for permanent residency in Canada.
Benefits of a PGWP:
- Gain valuable Canadian work experience
- Improve your English or French language skills
- Increase your chances of obtaining permanent residency in Canada
Glossary:
- Designated Learning Institution (DLI): A Canadian school authorized to accept international students. You can find a list of DLIs on the IRCC website.
- Open Work Permit: A work permit that allows you to work for any employer in Canada, without needing a job offer in advance.
Eligibility Criteria: Am I eligible for a PGWP?
To qualify for a PGWP, you’ll need to meet the following criteria:
- Graduate from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada: This means your school is authorized to accept international students.
- Complete a program that’s at least eight months long: The length of your PGWP will be tied to your program duration (more on that later).
- Maintain full-time student status throughout your program: Exceptions might apply for scheduled breaks, so check with your program advisor.
- Apply within 180 days of receiving your final marks or program completion confirmation.
- Meet all medical exam requirements, if applicable to your desired field (e.g., healthcare).
PGWP Validity: How Long is Your PGWP Valid For?
The duration of your PGWP depends on the length of your study program:
- 8 months to 2 years: You’ll get a PGWP valid for up to the length of your program (e.g., an 18-month program qualifies for an 18-month PGWP).
- Exception 1: Certain intensive 16–23-month graduate programs qualify for a 3-year PGWP regardless of program length.
- Exception 2: As of February 15, 2024, master’s students (meeting eligibility criteria) qualify for a 3-year PGWP, irrespective of program duration.
- Over 2 years: Congratulations, you’ve earned a 3-year PGWP!
Application Process: Applying for Your PGWP
The application process can be done within Canada or outside Canada. Here’s a simplified breakdown:
- Gather your documents: Proof of graduation, transcripts, passport copies, and photographs are some key requirements. A complete list can be found on the IRCC website.
- Submit your application: It’s generally recommended to apply online for faster processing. However, you can also apply by mail. Refer to the official IRCC website for detailed instructions on applying online or by mail: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship.html
- Pay the application fee: Be prepared to cover the processing cost.
- Wait for a decision: Processing times for PGWP applications can vary depending on individual circumstances. It’s advisable to check the IRCC website for current processing times: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship.html
Working While You Wait
The good news? You can often start working full-time under your study permit as soon as you submit your PGWP application (as long as you meet all eligibility criteria). This “maintained status” allows you to continue working until a decision is made on your PGWP.
